Shadow Amulet - Item Guide for Defense of the Ancients (DotA)

Specifications Brief

  • purchased from Cache of the Quel'thelan
  • requires 1600 gold pieces
  • grants +30 attack speed
  • Fades bearer when activated

Detailed Description

The Shadow Amulet may be activated by selecting it with a left-click in the inventory or pressing 7 on the number pad. Upon activation, the amulet causes the hero to Fade after a lapse of 2.6 seconds. In this state, the hero appears translucent to the player and the amulet icon appears in the status panel at the bottom of the screen. For as long as the hero remains stationary, it is rendered invisible to enemy troops. Invisibility is lost when the hero changes location.

It should be noted that the amulet does not require mana points (MP) to activate. It is also void of any cooldown penalty. This will prove useful in confrontation scenarios where the losing hero needs to escape with little or no remaining MP.

Strategic Suggestions

On-the-Defense

The Shadow Amulet is suitable for use in conjunction with channeling spells. For example, the amulet may be activated just as Crystal Maiden channels Freezing Field. This minimizes the possibility of having her spell interrupted by enemies. It does not matter whether the amulet is activated before or after the spell as long as the hero remains stationary.

On-the-Offense

This item is also suitable for use in ambush attacks. Though not as spectacular as Mirana Nightshade's global Moonlight Shadow, it is still respectable for use by heroes who rely on stealth maneuvers for their kills. Heroes like Anti-Mage would benefit from such surprise attacks on lone enemy heroes farming/ creeping in their lanes. Like a low-lying predator, this strategy requires the bait to appear at the right moment. Patience is key!

Upgrade Options

Together with Claymore, Shadow Amulet forms the new recipe for Lothar's Edge. Wind Walk is a worthy upgrade to Fade as it confers invisibility but does not restrict the user's mobility. This enables more versatile use of invisibility in difficult battles.

Ending Note

It is one of those rare items still missing flavour texts. As of version 6.77b, in-game tool tips offer no explanation about its background or origin. Hopefully, this gets rectified soon.

Many thanks to Ice-Frog for the continued developments on Warcraft III. Happy DotA-ing!
